20 Endeavor Entrepreneurs participate in Endeavor Digital Media Tour in NYC

Pozitron was of the 20 Endeavor Entrepreneurs to participate in Endeavor Digital Media Tour. Fırat Isbecer represented Pozitron at the event. He expressed how strong NY became in the digital world with the growth of internet industry in addition to the existent media and financial industry, adding "New York is a great alternative to Silicon Valley"

Learn more about the Endeavor Media Tour from the article below;

by Justin Belmont

A global organization in 15 countries, Endeavor supports 632 High-Impact Entrepreneurs (selected from 29,000 candidates), connecting them to a network of 2,400 top local and international business leaders who volunteer their time to provide pro-bono mentorship, advice, connections, and supports. In 2010, these executives spent over 25,000 hours mentoring entrepreneurs.

One of the popular services that Endeavor Global provides to Endeavor Entrepreneurs is access to special “Immersion Tours.” On November 9-10, 20 Endeavor Entrepreneurs from emerging markets in Latin America and the Middle East gathered in New York City for a Digital Media Tour, meeting with numerous senior executives in the digital media and advertising space from companies like Facebook, News Corporation, Huffington Post / AOL, IAC, R/GA, Edelman, Gilt Groupe, and Barclays Capital. These executives delivered presentations and offered pro-bono mentoring and support. A list of participating Endeavor companies can be found at the bottom; many of these firms are generating between $2M and $10M+ and are working with multinational clients such as Google, Facebook, Coca-Cola, Citi, Nike, IBM, and Sony.
The tour kicked off on Wednesday morning at Barclays Capital, a sponsor of the Tour, with a fireside chat with Endeavor Global Board member Reid Hoffman, Co-founder and Chairman of LinkedIn and Partner at Greylock. Reid shared his personal entrepreneurial story and offered his assessment of the current technology landscape, including new areas for innovation.
At Barclays, Entrepreneurs also attended a panel “Investing in Online Media and Advertising Start-Ups,” which shed light on recent IPOs, future trends, and tips for entrepreneurs interested in fundraising. The panel, introduced by Paul Parker (Global Head of M&A, Barclays Capital), was moderated by David Shrier (Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Ernst & Young), and featured Endeavor Entrepreneur Mariano Suárez Battán (Co-founder,Three Melons), Greg Dalvito (Co-Head, Technology M&A, Barclays Capital), Howard Morgan (Managing Partner, First Round Capital), and Dave Morgan (Founder & CEO, Simulmedia [backed by Union Square Ventures] and angel investor). At one point, Mariano summarized many Endeavor Entrepreneurs’ view on the economic downtown: “We were ‘born’ in a crisis: Argentina in 2001. So, in 2008, when my friends in the US said that there was a crisis, I said ‘whaaaat?’ For us, a crisis is a feature, not a bug.”
Later, at Endeavor Global’s offices in Union Square, Sunny Bates (CEO,Sunny Bates Associates) moderated a panel on building a fast-growth media company, which addressed challenges surrounding building an effective team and scaling successfully. Panelists were Kirsten Nevill-Manning (International HR and Staffing, Facebook; formerly at Google) and Melanie Hughes, COO, Gilt Groupe.
Then PR expert Brian Reich (SVP and Global Editor, Edelman), drawing on lessons from his new book Shift & Reset, discussed macro issues for cultivating engagement beyond traditional strategies.

Continuing their busy day in New York, Entrepreneurs then visited R/GA, a full service advertising agency that was named Adweek‘s “Digital Agency of the Decade” as well as Adweek’s “Digital/Interactive Agency of the Year.” William Charnock (Chief Strategy Officer, R/GA) discussed some of R/GA’s most successful campaigns, and offered advice for taking advantage of various areas of advertising — from mobile and social media to visual design and digital productions — to create compelling campaigns.

On Wednesday evening, Entrepreneurs convened at the iconic Frank Gehry building that is home to IAC(InterActiveCorp), an Internet company with over 50 brands across 40 countries led by Chairman and Senior Executive Barry Diller, previously head of Paramount Pictures, Fox Broadcasting, and USA Broadcasting. A “Founders’ Panel” highlighted the experiences of founders from some of IAC’s most popular sites, in addition to David Kidder, Co-founder and CEO ofClickable. Then, at a cocktail reception at IAC, Entrepreneurs had the chance to network with IAC executives and employees, as well as various Endeavor network and board members.
The second day of the media tour (November 10) kicked off with 1:1 mentoring sessions between Endeavor Entrepreneurs and industry and subject matter experts, customized to the Entrepreneurs’ industries and specific business needs. “The mentoring sessions, like the Tour itself, were relevant, well-organized, and highly valuable,” said Endeavor Entrepreneur Ramzi Halaby (The Online Project). “We have already started implementing a number of the tips and recommendations.”
“They were amazing connections,” said Endeavor Entrepreneur David Basulto of Plataforma Networks. “Even if [some of the mentors] were from companies in different industries, they’ve gone through some of the same issues so the experience was very valuable. They were very open to collaborate with us, tell us about their insights, and connect us with people, so it’s a huge benefit for us. They’re already connecting us with the right people we’re looking for (for instance, people in advertising sales in New York).”
Jesse Dwyer (Senior Sales Development Lead, Facebook) then delivered a lively presentation on social media marketing, discussing how best to utilize Facebook as a platform and medium for building businesses and marketing to key audiences.

Entrepreneurs then divided into groups and visited companies relevant to their businesses:

- At Gilt Groupe, one of the fastest growing e-commerce sites in the U.S., Alexis Maybank (Founder & President, Premium Products and Services) and Susan Lyne (Chairman) offered advice on driving user adoption through game mechanics, leveraging online marketing and social media to build brands, and differentiating products from the competition.

- At News Corporation, a global and vertically integrated company with brands including 20th Century Fox, HarperCollins, and Sky, Entrepreneurs gained advice from Jorge Espinel (EVP, Strategy and Corporate Development – News Digital Media) and Gil Fuchsberg (SVP – News Digital Media).

- At The Huffington Post, a top news website and content aggregating blog launched in 2005 and acquired by AOL in 2011, Entrepreneurs gained advice from Jimmy Soni (Chief of Staff), Tim O’Brien (Executive Editor), and Nico Pitney (Managing Editor), among other senior staff members.

- MediaVest is a division of Starcom MediaVest Group and one of the leading, full-service media specialist companies offering brand-building results and business solutions for marketing partners. Entrepreneurs spoke with Guillermo Abud, VP & Digital Director at Forty-Two Degrees at MediaVest (MV42), a leading multicultural media agency with clients such as Kraft, P&G, The Coca-Cola Company and Wal-Mart.

- At Kickstarter, the largest online funding platform for creative projects, Entrepreneurs gained valuable insights from Perry Chen, Co-founder and CEO. Specifically, Chen recounted his unique road to becoming an entrepreneur and discussed the value of finding and focusing on a niche market.

Entrepreneurs then reconvened for a visit to Google‘s New York office, before joining 600 New York and global CEOs and business leaders at Endeavor’s annual Gala, which has raised $2m and will honor Reid Hoffman andFadi Ghandour—an event hosted by Endeavor Board chairman Edgar Bronfman, Jr. (Chairman, Warner Music Group).

Endeavor’s previous Immersion Tours have taken Endeavor Entrepreneurs to such places as Silicon Valley, Boston, India, and Israel. At the October 2010Silicon Valley Tour, entrepreneurs met with executives at Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and eBay. December 2010’s Fashion and Design Spotlight in New York featured presentations, conversations, and panels with top fashion executives, as well as several “Behind the Seams” tours. Where Silicon Valley Meets Emerging Market Entrepreneurs

“Sand Hill Road is two-way,” Turkish entrepreneur Fatih İşbecer noted on a visit in 2010. “And it’s easy to get from one side to the other. That’s nice.” Working in Anatolia’s bustling business capital İstanbul, where traffic has no logic or mercy, it was an odd, yet revealing observation.

While entrepreneurship is indeed alive and on the rise in Turkey, as it is in emerging markets worldwide, it continues to face tremendous obstacles such as lack of capital, mentors and networks. Breaking them down is the reason that Fatih, CEO of the mobile tech company Pozitron is, along with 170 other emerging market entrepreneurs, in Silicon Valley this week. He is attending the Endeavor Entrepreneur Summit that starts tomorrow.

The summit is hosted by Endeavor, the non-non-profit that identifies and supports “high-impact entrepreneurs,” that is the most promising innovators running “macro” businesses that the potential to create “hundreds, even thousands of jobs, generate millions in revenue and draw in global investments.” Last year, Endeavor’s network of over 500 emerging market entrepreneurs throughout Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and now Asia (it operates in 15 countries, including regional offices in Dubai and Singapore), created more than 150,000 jobs and generated over $4.1 billion in revenue.

$4.1 billion in revenues shows that, unlike most non-profits supporting entrepreneurs, Endeavor does not think “micro” or aspire to Hallmark moments. With Wall Street rigor and Silicon Valley edge, it, under the guidance of its vivacious Co-Founder and CEO Linda Rottenberg and board chair Edgar Bronfman Jr., deploys a “mentor capitalist” model that breaks down the barriers preventing emerging market innovators from becoming the next Microsoft or Virgin. Its global network of seasoned business leaders, some of who pop on Forbes’s billionaires list, advise emerging market entrepreneurs on strengthening and scaling their operations to global excellence. The organization, as the summit’s agenda reflects, is about creating opportunity and social mobility in places where opportunity and mobility were only seen as an American dream.

The Endeavor Entrepreneur Summit is the 4th biannual gathering, the first to be held in San Francisco, of emerging market entrepreneurial innovators, business leaders and investors. And its the investors that couldn’t be happier.

Though entrepreneurship is the zeitgeist and there appears to more money flowing into start-ups, investors are cautious. “According to the National Venture Capital Association,” a New York Times article reported this week, “venture capitalists invested $5.9 billion in the first three months of the year, up 14 percent from the period a year earlier, but they invested in 51 fewer companies, indicating they were funneling more money into fewer start-ups.” With dismal U.S. job numbers, disappointing signs for an economic recovery and the threat of an American default on its debt, that is not good news. Caution stymies growth.

It also perpetuates pessimism. Since Wall Street’s meltdown in 2008 and the phenomenal rise of emerging market economies such as Brazil, China and India, talk about America’s economy inevitably becomes a discussion about America’s decline. “There is a sense that America has lost ground,” says Rottenberg. “The fact is America remains the most entrepreneurial economy on the planet.” Rottenberg hopes that Endeavor’s Summit will help restore that perspective, while also celebrating emerging market entrepreneurs.

Back in 1997 when Rottenberg launched Endeavor in Argentina and Chile where she had been working on venture financing and social entrepreneurship, no one celebrated emerging market entrepreneurs. “There wasn’t even a word for entrepreneur in Spanish or Portuguese,” Rottenberg is known to say. Entrepreneurship wasn’t inspired but pursued out of necessity. With no jobs or educational options, hobbling together your own business was unavoidable. No surprise then that Silicon Valley avoided emerging markets.

“Fifteen years ago, VCs used to say ‘this is Florence in the age of the Renaissance,’” says Rottenberg. Convinced that all the world’s entrepreneurship was contained in Silicon Valley, they felt little need to look elsewhere. Sand Hill Road was, metaphorically, a one-way street. Globalization has changed that. That is a positive in Rottenberg’s eye.

“Entrepreneurship isn’t a zero sum game,” she says. “It’s exciting for me to see that others (in Silicon Valley) see the same thing. There is a mutual interest from both the United States and emerging markets to learn from one another.” Argentine entrepreneur Wences Casares agrees.

“Starting a company from scratch anywhere is very hard,” says Casares, an Endeavor global board member and one of the organizations earliest selected entrepreneurs who made it big with Latin America’s first on-line brokerage firm Patagon. “But to do it in emerging markets where there is no access to capital, no culture or ecosystem to support entrepreneurship; where the rules of the game change often and without notice, it is much, much harder.” That is precisely the reason why Casares explains that Silicon Valley needs to engage with them. “When you meet these emerging market entrepreneurs and you see the passion and the fire in their eyes, you are reminded of the real reason entrepreneurs do what they do.”

Interestingly the reason isn’t money. While capital is indispensible to any entrepreneur’s foundation and success, value is what drives the type of entrepreneurs Endeavor selects in a highly competitive multi-layered process. “High impact entrepreneurs are those who create and add value to a society,” say Marc Dfouni and Nemr Nicholas Badine, founders of Eastline Marketing, Lebanon’s first digital marketing agency. “Their achievements aren’t solely monetary. High-impact entrepreneurs are defined by sustainability, building companies that last.”

According to Egyptian entrepreneurs Hind and Nadia Wassef they’re also defined by their resilience. That is something they have had to channel since the events in Tahrir square. “When you live in a country that has been under a totalitarian regime for 30 years, a lot of garbage needs to come up.” The sisters, who run Egypt’s popular bookstore operation Diwan, say much of this “garbage” had been directed at Egypt’s entrepreneurs who have been blamed for Egypt’s malaise. “The revolution was lovely and inspirational. I’m sure it looked lovely on Al-Jazeera, but you wouldn’t have liked being in its kitchen.”

That the Wassef sisters were “in the kitchen” with advice and insights gathered at previous Endeavor events made a difference. “I remember being at the selection panel in India in 2009 when the only thing anyone would talk about was the recession,” Hind Wassef says. She recalls being told ‘this is a crisis, cut to the chase, get down to the nuts and bolts, stick to your core.’ “That was useful to us during the mess of the revolution.”

The Wassef sisters are headed to San Francisco for similar insights as well as what Nadia says is “a much needed break.” She likens the Endeavor Summit to Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. “It is a place where you can play around with ideas, experiment, and renew your drive.”

It is also a place they’re looking forward to connecting with the world’s greatest business and entrepreneurial minds. With keynotes from Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and LinkedIn founder (and Endeavor board member) Reid Hoffman, along with insights from top names from Google, Dell, Kleiner Perkins, Ning, and IBM –including Watson himself, Endeavor’s summit is a gathering of entrepreneurship and venture capital’s best.

“I’m looking forward to hearing from these experts” says Fatih İşbecer. “But I’m also looking forward for them to hearing about what’s going on in Turkey.” He notes that it used to be that Turkish entrepreneurs, like those throughout emerging markets, could only learn from American talent. “Now they want to learn from us.” İşbecer nods vigorously when I say that it’s sounds as though entrepreneurship has become a “two-way street,” then pauses, “Actually, it’s bigger than a street, it’s a global freeway.” Fasten your seat belts.

Pozitron was invited to Paribas L’Atelier Conference on Innovative, Emerging Market Partnership and Investment Opportunities!

On Friday May 20, following Endeavor’s International Selection Panel in London, BNP Paribas and L’Atelier, an incubator with the European bank, hosted a conference focused on creating and funding startups both in France and abroad. L'Atelier detects examples of "disruptive innovation" that bring about concrete changes for companies and their employees. It communicates these key trends through its various communication channels and helps position companies to catch these ideas early on. BNP Paribas’ clients are increasingly interested in the innovation taking place around the world for the purposes of investment, acquisition, strategic partnerships, and expansion. The afternoon session was devoted to Endeavor.

After a gracious introduction by the president of BNP Paribas, Allen Taylor and Karen Martell, both based in Endeavor’s San Francisco office, kicked off the session by presenting Endeavor’s model, history, and the programs and services Endeavor offers to its 603 entrepreneurs in 11 countries. Then six Endeavor Entrepreneurs presented their companies and their experience as high-impact entrepreneurs in emerging markets. The companies include:

APPI – Alexandre Pi (Brazil): POS payment systems
Pozitron – Firat Isbecer (Turkey): mobile apps e-commerce, payment, and remote access
Globant – Guibert Englebienne (Argentina): IT, gaming, mobile, and innovation off-shoring company
Colaboracion Virtual– Erik Torreiter (Chile): videoconferencing solution
Nada Debs - Nada Debs (Lebanon): furniture and home accessory designer
Proteus – Marcelo Romcy (Brazil): e-security company

The conference and the Entrepreneurs themselves attracted considerable media attention. In addition to journalists directly covering the event and interviewing Endeavor staff, Entrepreneurs Florence Martin, Erik Torreiter and Firat Isbecer participated in interviews which were then broadcast on France’s most popular radio station. Coupled with investor interest in innovation, the conference participants were excited about Endeavor’s exploration of Eastern and Central Europe as potential expansion targets.
